Accessibility Top Tips for your Brand

Whenever I am asked to develop a brand, I always find myself returning to accessibility as my priority. Why? Well, if nobody can understand a brand, it misses the mark before it's even begun.

For charities, accessibility becomes even more important. We are under the spotlight and it's vital that charities are ethical, even when branding - I would argue, especially when branding! We all want our audiences to be able to engage with us and be includesd in our work - this is only possible when accessibility is at the heart of your branding.

So, what accessibility laws do I live by when it comes to branding? There are quite a few, but here's my top 5 'must haves' for incorporating accessibility into your brand.

Top 5 'must haves'

  1. Keep it simple. This applies to all aspects of your branding - from your logo and colours to key messaging. You need to be able to describe what you do and why in one sentence.

  2. Pick your font wisely. Size, font type, placement of text - all these things contribute to how accessible your brand is.

  3. Consider digital. It's a legal requirement to meet accessibility standards on your website, but it's important to be accessible on all digital channels. Alt Text, hyperlinks that say where they go (instead of 'click here'), avoiding PDF documents - all these things make a difference.

  4. Use Plain English. I love words, but playing with them is not very accessible! Keep your language jargon-free, pun-free and straightforward. The Hemingway Editor can be really useful to help with this.

  5. Build-in to your website. Every single person who visits your website should be able to enjoy that experience. I use a plugin called UserWay to enhance accessibility, but there's other tools out there like ReachDeck. Find what works for you and your budget.

Accessibility doesn't have to be an after-thought. You can build your brand around it and still have something beautiful that achieves impact.
